We couldn't end School Library Month without giving a shoutout to our phenomenal school librarians. This group always goes the extra mile to make sure our students and teachers have the resources they need to be successful.

Our librarians also lead many educational programs, clubs, and activities in our schools that provide enriching experiences for our students. If you stop by any of our school libraries, you'll be amazed by the creative displays, engaging activities, and collaborative projects our librarians create and develop. Their love for literacy is contagious and we greatly appreciate the important work they do.

Governor Cooper's School Library Month Proclamation encapsulates the significance of school libraries and librarians.

SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH 2024: A PROCLAMATION BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

WHEREAS, school libraries promote literacy, foster an enjoyment of reading, and help students develop the skills they need to access and evaluate information; and

WHEREAS, school libraries serve as invaluable resources that provide both mirrors and windows for students in our schools, reflecting their own experiences, cultures, and identities while also offering glimpses into the diverse perspectives and realities of others, thereby fostering empathy, understanding, and inclusivity among learners; and

WHEREAS, school libraries offer educational activities designed to enhance reading motivation, establish the information literacy skills necessary for lifelong learning, and promote competency in new and developing technologies; and

WHEREAS, the full potential of school libraries is dependent upon certified professional school librarians whose varied skills support administrators, teachers, and students in effectively engaging a wide range of teaching and learning technologies and information resources; and

WHEREAS, it is important to recognize school libraries and qualified school librarians for the vital role they play in creating an inclusive and relevant academic environment throughout the state of North Carolina, including the availability of carefully curated school library collections; and

WHEREAS, Governor Cooper has proclaimed 2024 the Year of Public Schools, underscoring their importance in our society, and the State of North Carolina proudly recognizes the hard work of school library staff and the contributions school libraries make to fostering a life-long interest in learning for students across our state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April, 2024, as “SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
